Frequently Asked Questions
Many people discover OxyPeak Longevity Institute while looking for answers. They may be exploring hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), recovering from an injury or illness, trying to improve their physical performance, or simply trying to age better.
We’ve gathered answers to some of the questions we hear most often about OxyPeak, HBOT, our services, and what to expect as an OxyPeak patient.
About Us
At OxyPeak Longevity Institute, we don’t believe that everyone needs the same treatment plan. Some people come to us because they’re thinking about healthy aging and longevity. Others are focused on recovery, cognitive health, veteran wellness, athletic performance, or maintaining the quality of life they’ve worked hard to build.
That’s why every patient begins with a consultation and evaluation with our medical team. We take the time to understand you and what you’re hoping to accomplish before making recommendations. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the foundation of what we do, but our approach isn’t ever one-size-fits-all. Every recommendation is based on physician oversight and tailored to you.
At OxyPeak, we believe the details matter. From treatment protocols to patient comfort and safety, the details make a difference.
Care at OxyPeak begins with understanding you.
During your medical consultation, we’ll discuss your health history, your goals, any concerns you have, and what brought you to us in the first place. From there, our medical team can help you understand which services or therapies may be appropriate.
For some patients, that conversation may focus on hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Others may ask about biomarker testing or the OxyPeak Brain Gym.
Our role is to help you understand your options and help you make informed decisions about your care.
No.
Every patient who walks through our doors has different health concerns, medical histories, and priorities. That’s why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to care.
After a consultation and medical evaluation, our physician and clinical team provide recommendations based on your individual circumstances.
Our goal is to help you find the approach that’s right for you.
OxyPeak’s patients are usually interested in improving recovery, physical performance, brain health, or overall quality of life.
Our patients include active older adults, veterans, athletes, and people focused on brain health, recovery, or performance.
You don’t need to know exactly which therapy you want to pursue before reaching out. In fact, many people come to OxyPeak simply looking for answers. The first step is a conversation about what’s going on and what you hope to achieve.
About HBOT
HBOT is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The pressure helps your body absorb much more oxygen than it normally could, allowing the oxygen to circulate through the body.
Your body uses oxygen for just about everything. It helps produce energy, repair tissue, and support normal brain and body function. That’s why physicians and researchers have studied hyperbaric oxygen therapy for over a century.
Oxygen is fuel for your body. Every cell relies on oxygen to function properly. During HBOT, your body can absorb more oxygen than it could under normal conditions. That oxygen is carried through the bloodstream to tissues throughout the body.
While the science behind HBOT can get fairly technical, the basic idea is simple: give the body access to more oxygen to support the processes that depend on it.
For most people, yes.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used in medicine for decades and is generally safe when it has proper medical supervision. But like any medical treatment, it isn’t right for everyone.
Certain medical conditions may prevent someone from receiving HBOT. These can include lung conditions, recent ear or sinus injuries, uncontrolled seizure disorders, pregnancy, certain implantable medical devices, and other medical considerations. That’s why every patient starts with a consultation and medical evaluation. If HBOT isn’t appropriate for you, we’ll tell you, because your safety is a major priority to us.
Yes, for certain medical conditions.
The FDA has cleared hyperbaric oxygen therapy for several conditions, including decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, radiation injury, and certain difficult wounds.
In some situations, physicians may prescribe HBOT “off-label,” based on a patient’s individual circumstances and the available research. Researchers have studied HBOT in numerous areas that are not yet FDA-cleared, including recovery, brain health, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, healthy aging, and cognitive performance.
The OxyPeak Method is our physician-directed approach to hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
This protocol is rooted in decades of research into oxygen, recovery, and a phenomenon known in scientific literature as the hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox, or HHP.
During treatment, patients alternate between breathing oxygen through a mask and breathing normal air. These oxygen fluctuations are an important part of the OxyPeak Method. The basic idea is that the body responds not only to oxygen itself, but also to changes in oxygen exposure.
For most patients, the takeaway is simple: our goal isn’t just to provide HBOT. It’s to deliver it thoughtfully, safely, and using a protocol designed around the best available evidence.
This is probably one of the most common questions we hear. And here’s the honest answer: it depends.
Your treatment recommendations will be based on your health history and the reason you’re pursuing care. Some conditions and situations may respond well to fewer treatments, while others may benefit from several weeks or months.
We’ll discuss that with you during your consultation so you have a clear understanding of what treatment may look like for your situation.
Most OxyPeak hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions last two hours.
We’ll explain exactly what to expect before your first treatment and answer any questions you may have along the way.
The Treatment Experience
Never. And that’s one of the things that surprises many people.
At OxyPeak, HBOT treatments take place in a shared hyperbaric environment rather than inside a small, single-person chamber.
Each treatment at OxyPeak is supervised by trained professionals, and a member of our clinical team is inside the HBOT suite throughout treatment. You’ll also share the space with other patients who are pursuing their own health goals. Most people find the atmosphere comfortable and surprisingly social.
When some people hear the term “hyperbaric chamber,” they picture a narrow tube where they’re lying down by themselves. That’s not the OxyPeak HBOT experience at all.
Our multi-person hyperbaric suites are spacious and comfortable. They feel much less restrictive than people expect. Patients sit comfortably during treatment and can even stretch out or move around.
If claustrophobia is a concern for you, please let us know. We’ll be happy to answer your questions and help you understand exactly what to expect during treatment.
Most of the time, it doesn’t really “feel” like anything. As the HBOT suite pressurizes, you’ll notice a feeling in your ears, similar to what you experience when an airplane cabin pressurizes during takeoff. We’ll teach you a few simple techniques to help equalize the pressure and stay comfortable.
Once treatment begins, you’ll spend part of the session breathing oxygen through a mask as part of the OxyPeak Method. Most people settle in quickly. Some watch a movie, read, or simply enjoy a little uninterrupted time.
Because both the treatment experience and the protocol are different than other HBOT providers.
At OxyPeak, patients receive treatment in a spacious multiplace (or multi-person) hyperbaric suite, rather than a small single-person tube. Most patients find it more comfortable than they expected.
Our multiplace chambers also allow us to deliver the OxyPeak Method. During treatment, patients don’t breathe oxygen continuously through the entire session. Instead, they alternate between breathing oxygen through a mask and breathing normal air. Those carefully controlled fluctuations are difficult to replicate in a traditional, single-person chamber.
Additional Services
While hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the foundation behind what we do, it isn’t the only tool available.
Patients come to OxyPeak seeking specialized assessments like advanced biomarker testing, or workouts in the OxyPeak Brain Gym.
Not every patient needs every service. Our job is to help you understand your options and determine what makes sense for your situation.
No. In fact, most people don’t.
At OxyPeak, we don’t recommend services our patients don’t need. For some patients, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be the primary recommendation. Others may benefit from dual-task training in the OxyPeak Brain Gym.
Our role is to help you understand your options and recommend what’s most appropriate for you and your needs.
It starts the same way everything else starts at OxyPeak: with a conversation.
During your consultation, we’ll discuss your goals, health history, current concerns, and any questions you may have. From there, our physician and clinical team can make recommendations specifically for you.
Some patients pursue HBOT alone. Others may be interested in therapies that support energy, recovery, hormone optimization, metabolic health, cognitive function, or other goals. Recommendations are based on the individual, not a predetermined package or program.
The OxyPeak Brain Gym is a dual-task training program designed to challenge both the brain and body at the same time.
Some patients participate in the Brain Gym as part of a broader physician-directed care plan. Like every service at OxyPeak, participation is based on individual goals and recommendations rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Additional Services
It depends on why you’re receiving treatment.
Depending on your provider and plan, insurance may cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy for certain FDA-approved medical conditions. However, many of the reasons patients seek HBOT at OxyPeak, including healthy aging, cognitive performance, recovery, and wellness-focused goals, are not covered by insurance.
If you have questions about coverage, our team will be happy to discuss your specific situation and help you understand your options.
OxyPeak Longevity Institute is located inside the Center for Advanced Healthcare at Brownwood, a medical facility in The Villages, Florida.
Many of our patients live in the area, but some travel from across Florida or other parts of the country to receive care. If you’re traveling from out of town, our team can help answer questions and make planning your visit a little easier.
Getting started is simple.
The first step is scheduling a consultation with our team. We’ll take time to learn about your health history, your goals, and what brought you to OxyPeak. From there, we can answer your questions and help you understand the options that may make sense for you.
